Looking at beauties from different perspectives

The Cathedral of Siena (whose construction began in the mid-twelfth century and completed by 1370) re-opens its “Gate of Heaven”. From 1 March 2014 to 6 January 2015 it will be possible to visit the peak of the factory, as well as access to a range of venues up to now only opened to workers who, directed by great architects, have come and gone over the centuries.

Above the starry vaults of the right aisle, there is the narrow passage reserved for small groups, accompanied by a guide. From there, the visitor will see the stained glass windows created by Ulisse De Matteis with the representation of the Apostles and will have the perfect view on the floor. It is one of the largest and finest examples of a complex of marble marquetry, a decorative project that lasted six centuries, from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century, whose designs were created by remarkable artists such as Sassetta, Pinturicchio, Domenico Beccafumi, and that according to Giorgio Vasari was the “most beautiful and greatest and magnificent floor that had never been done.”

The path then continues onto the balcony of the dome from which you can see the high altar. From the view of the left aisle, you will be amazed by the stunning view on the Basilica of St. Dominic, the Medici Fortress, the entire dome of the chapel of St. John the Baptist, and the surrounding landscape up to the Montagnola senese. Visitors will also be able to get behind the prospectus in front of the terrace that overlooks the Piazza del Duomo with the sight of the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala and finally access to the balcony from the counter.
