The essence of Conceptual Fine Arts captured in a photo (by Thomas Struth)

At Christie’s auction, on October 18, in London, the best performance for medium was linked to photographic works. Of the nine lots, all sold, two went within the estimates (both works of Andreas Gursky ), whereas the other seven lots fetched higher prices than expected. Worth to mention is a work by Thomas Struth “San Zaccaria , Venice” which came close to £ 700.000, with an estimate of £ 150-200.000. A new appointment with the German photographer is expected on November 15, for the next round of Sotheby’s auction in Paris.

His work, titled “Musée du Louvre, Paris, 1989” (estimated € 140.000 to 180.000), will certainly be long disputed in Paris. However, what is even more interesting for us is that this piece seems to sum up most of the philosophy on which Conceptual Fine Arts is centred. This photograph embodies a contemporary and conceptual work in which the artist reflects on the ancient art and shows its possible use/interpretation by a (young) audience of the present time.
