What a perfect story to promote the re-discovered van Dyck’s soon on sale at Christie’s

It must have been a real shock for Father Jamie MacLeod to find out that the Sir Anthony van Dyck’s painting he bought from an antiques shop in Cheshire is indeed an original work by the Flemish painter. The re-discovery took place thanks to the BBC television programme “The Antiques Roadshow”. What Father MacLeod paid just £400 more than 10 years ago, has been now estimated between £300,000-500,000 by the auction house Christie’s, which will offer the painting next month, during its Old Master & British Paintings Evening Sale. “The proceeds will be put to excellent use – stated Father Macleod – going towards the acquisition of new church bells for Whaley Hall Ecumenical Retreat House in Derbyshire to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War in 2018.”
