Day one at TEFAF 2014: get ready for the opening!

TEFAF 2014 has just begun, and collectors from all over the world are ready to enter the fair. In the meanwhile we already had the opportunity to visit the booths, and here is our first gallery of today. It was taken in the “antiques” section, just a few minutes ago. As we usually do, we tried to capture the conceptual side of what is on display.

The first diffrence from a contemporary art fair is that all of the works here were still available. This underlines that to buy certain kind of pieces you need to see them in person first.

Many collectors from China are expected to come, but according to art dealer Floris J. Van Der Ven they nonetheless don’t represent more than 10% of the market. He also says that 80% of the buyers are from Western Europe. What about the last 10%? They are the big buyers from United States. Some of the artworks on display at his booth have their price written on the captions, others don’t. That of these latter is discretely written on the back of the caption card.

Aligne Debusigne, from Cahn gallery is of the same opinion.. We asked her if the gallery deals with modern and contemporary art collectors too and she replied yes. Among them there is a mysterious French guy who is said to collect very young artists and who apparently has a museum, based in France, dedicated only to antiques (hopefully we will be able to find out his name in the next days). Also for Cahn gallery the big buyers are actually from US.

Contemporary art collectors seem to be interested also in old books: what a conceptual side! Helen C. Wustefeld, from Wustefeld gallery told us that the 2milion extraordinary micro book on display has been requested by a young contemporary art collector.

It’s all for the moment, now we go back to the fair. Stay connected!
