Lucio Fontana, Alighiero Boetti, Alberto Burri on sale at Sotheby’s Italian Art sale auction (October 17th)

Sotheby’s London presents the 15th edition of 20th Century Italian Art Sale, on Thursday, October 17, 2013. The auction will include a selection of 47 diverse masterworks, from a 1913 Futurist work by Gino Severini (“Passo di Ballo”, £200/250.000, EUR 232/290.000 devoted to his dominant theme, the Dance) to contemporary works by the main ‘Arte Povera’ artists including Alighiero Boetti, Mario Merz, Giulio Paolini and Michelangelo Pistoletto. The sale will also feature works from the Collection of Stanley J. Seeger, the distinguished connoisseur of Italian Art (1930-2011): for example an early 1954 “Sacco” by Alberto Burri (“Bianco-Rosso”, exhibited at the Art Museum Princeton University in 1961), one of the first works acquired by Seeger in 1955, when he was living in Italy after his graduation from Princeton.

Headlining the sale are three “Concetti spaziali” by Lucio Fontana of great rarity, dating from 1956 to 1961. The first of three is “Concetto Spaziale, L’Inferno”, 1956, which belongs to the series of Opere Barocche (1954-1957). “L’Inferno” is one of the rarest works of the artist, who created only four rhomboidal paintings. It has been exhibited throughout the world, from Zurich to New York and is expected to realise £700,000 – 1,000 .000 (EUR 815/1,160,000).
